PT

ENG
EMOTIONAL OBJECT is an interactive installation.
A multi-user game that invites visitors to interact with a mecano-sculpture, a digital interface and a sound composition. The player procedes while speculating about which emotion will result from a determined action, and about the effect of the individual over the collective.

Rotating like a child's spinning top, the object, both physical and virtual, is divided in sections mapped onto 24 emotional states represented by colors and sounds .

The goal of Emotional Object is for 1 to 4 players to pass through the various emotional states, while keeping the object moving and in balance. Should it lean too far, no one wins and a new game will begin.

If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution
is pleased to announce a new performance by Maria Pask, 4 F-ER. Maria Pask's performance will be the second in a new series of If I Can't Dance Tonight events, dedicated to the exploration of current developments in performance and focusing on the notion of the masquerade.

Maria Pask investigates collective creativity, social structures and empowerment. Working with open formats, Pask employs a broad array of methods ranging from sculpture and film to workshops, scripts, live performances and events.

Previous projects have involved a range of participants from different social groups. For Beautiful City for instance, her project at Skulptur Projekte Münster (2007), Pask set up a camp for the duration of the project where speakers of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds were invited to give lectures and respond to specific questions set by the artist. The camp was run by a number of young people who became, alongside the public, either believers or skeptics.

4 F-ER is a new performance closely related to the experiences from Beautiful City. It is resulting from a period of workshops led by the artist with a small group of Dutch young women and musicians. After a pilot in Studio Voltaire in London (2008) and a lecture in MuHKA in Antwerp (2008), for If I Can’t Dance Tonight Maria Pask will present 4 F-ER as a performance in Frascati Theatre.

The main characters and concerns are connected with the '4 F's': a term used in evolutionary biology to describe the four basic drives or mind states that humans are evolutionarily adapted to be proficient at: feeding, fighting, fleeing and fertility. The script follows the protagonists' reflections on what to do and what to be, both on a personal level and from a wider social perspective. The choreography focuses on the gestures these 4 F's arouse.

Maria Pask lives and works in Amsterdam. Previous solo exhibitions and performances were presented at Ellen de Bruijne Projects, Amsterdam (2006), If I Can’t Dance… Utrecht (2005) and Amsterdam (2006), Milton Keynes Gallery, Milton Keynes (2005), BAK, Basis voor Actuele Kunst, Utrecht (2004) and Marres, Maastricht (2001).

Performers: Inger Koerselman, Anne Marie van Rees, Adriënne Wennekes, Steven Leijen. Musicians: Marijn Jongewaard, David Hazeleger, Steven Leijen. Choreography: Esther de Vlam. Script: Maria Pask. Thanks to: Adva Zakai, Helena Pask, David Powel.

If I Can't Dance Tonight is curated by Frederique Bergholtz in collaboration with Maaike Gouwenberg.

If I Can't Dance Tonight is generously supported by the Mondriaan Foundation, SNS Reaalfonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.

Agnes Varda

(1975) 8 mins

http://www.28bienalsaopaulo.org.br/video-principal/reponse-de-femmes-resposta-de-mulheres

"What is it like to be a woman in 1975? This is the question Agnès Varda is trying to answer 'Réponse de Femmes', in a style quite characteristic of the politically committed cinema of the 1960's and 1970's. This short could accordingly be awfully outdated but for Varda's ability to turn a series of boring slogans into a stimulating experience, inventive and poetic as her findings are.

In what she calls a 'ciné-tract', in fact a short made for French TV, Varda has various female persons, ranging from a baby girl to a top model to an old woman appear before her camera and tell the spectator about themselves (except for the baby of course!): about the way they look, about sex and desire, about advertising and last but not least about the disputed motherly instinct. They can be beautiful, unprepossessing or outright ugly but little does it matter: they want to be treated as persons and not consumers and sex toys before ending up asold ghosts good to be forgotten and discarded. They protest against the conditioning imposed on them by society and the stifling sex roles that go with it.

The most striking thing about this pamphlet is the scene in which a pregnant woman dances naked in front of the camera and without the least ounce of shame for that. It is beautiful and moving. Of course you must not be a puritan to appreciate such a rare scene, like some of the Antenne 2 viewers who at the time of release complained to the channel about such a 'scandal'. But there is more to life than a series of taboos, isn't there?"
